“By gracious powers so wonderfully sheltered”

Remembering Dietrich Bonhoeffer 75 years after his Death

Organised by the Dietrich Bonhoeffer Centre London

and

the Dietrich Bonhoeffer Church London/Sydenham

Evening of 9th April 2020

10pm – 11pm (GMT)

The Event will be held via ZOOM

On April 9th 1945, Dietrich Bonhoeffer was murdered by the Nazis in the concentration camp Flossenbürg. 75 years later we – the Dietrich Bonhoeffer Centre London and the Dietrich Bonhoeffer Church – wish to commemorate Bonhoeffer’s death through an event that due to the current circumstances will be streamed online. We also hope to record the contributions and make them available on our website.

The event will include a short formal commemoration and a series of short contributions by people who through their life and work have shown a particular relationship to Bonhoeffer.

We know this invitation comes on very short notice. Originally, we had planned an event at the Dietrich Bonhoeffer Church in Sydenham/London but due to the Covid-19 crisis had to cancel that gathering. Yet, we hope that by organising an event to remember Bonhoeffer 75 years after his murder online and in the evening at 10pm (GMT) we can attract a large number of participants from all over the world.

Please find the zoom invitation here, you can join in via telephone as well:

Bonhoeffer Day 2020 and Musical (31. January – 2 February)

We are delighted to invite you to next years Bonhoefferday on Saturday 1st February 2020 “Bonhoeffer for future”. We’ll start the Bonhoefferday at 1.30 at the Bonhoefferchurch, 50 Dacres Road, SE 23 2NR.

Please book a ticket (free of charge) at Eventbrite:

https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/bonhoeffer-day-2020-bonhoeffer-for-future-tickets-82802692081?aff=ebdssbeac

Over the past two years, pupils and students have taken to the streets and demonstrated for climate justice. They call these events “Fridays for Future”, marking the day of the event as well as its purpose, i.e. a perspective to the future inhabited by the young who see their lives undermined by actions of the Boomers. At the same time, their demands are underlined by melting ice caps, floods in the north of England, and wildfires in Brazil’s Amazonas area, Australia, and the United States. With the 9th Bonhoeffer Day we hope to explore the relationship between these events and young’s people’s calls for climate justice and Bonhoeffer’s discussions of ‘wellbeing’, ‘bioethics’, and the role ‘confession’ plays in our society. Three talks by Guido de Graaf, Nicola Wilkes, and Jacob Phillips will make up the formal programe, while we also will have music and food.

Please note that we have a special treat this year before and after the Bonhoefferday: Miriam Kuellmer-Vogt performs the musical “Bonhoeffers große Liebe” (in German on Friday, 31st January, Christuskirche Knightsbridge) / Bonhoeffers great love (in English on Sunday, 2nd February, ST. Georges, 55 Alie Street, Whitechapel). Both events are on eventbrite as well and we would kindly ask you to book a ticket in advance (again free of charge):
